Dopo l'obsolescenza. Progetti per i viadotti ferroviari dismessi
2013
This article focuses on the increasing number of abandoned railways converted into new parkways, briefly investigating them trough the prism of obsolescence. Over the past forty years, the features matching with the average lifetime of infrastructural buildings have became of growing relevance dealing with contemporary policies in restructuring our territories. In the beginning of 21th century, facing the new challenges of the post-carbon era, cities of developed society are riddled with technical ruins, testaments to their recent productive past. Since the entanglement of transport infrastructure, industry and architecture highly represents important segments of 20th century urban tissues,…
The impact of the farming, abandonment and agricultural intensification on loss of water and soil. The example of the northern slopes of the Serra Gr…
2012
Land abandonment throughout the twentieth century led to an intense landscape transformation in the mountain areas of the Iberian Peninsula. In some cases, and after 50 years of abandonment, agriculture returned with the development of commercial farms and the intensification of the agrarian activities. In the Easter Iberian Peninsula, following the abandonment of olive groves, vineyards and cereals during the 50's, has been in the past two decades the expansion of intensive citrus production on sloping terrain. Geomorphological transects and simulated rainfall experiments have quantified the impact of traditional rainfed cultivation of the 50's, abandonment, and the intensification of farm…
. Strategie e iniziative per il recupero e la valorizzazione: un bilancio sui centri storici siciliani
2020
The present contribution focuses on the strategies carried out to hinder depopulation and facilitate the recovery of the historical city centres in Sicily in the last fifty years. In particular, the essay analyses if the strategies and initiatives fostered in this field had been respectful of the physical characteristics of these small towns. Furthermore, the present study intends to assess if the improvement of the “quality of life” has been considered among the strategies carried out to contrast depopulation. The scarce efficacy of policies and strategies over the last fifty years, which emerges from this analysis, is partially due to the endemic inability of politicians and local communi…
TANGIBLE AND INTANGIBLE HERITAGE IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SUSTAINABLE CITY
2013
This contribution is about the enhancement of the tangible and intangible cultural heritage and acknowledgement of environmental sustainability principles. It deals with the relationship between new ways of conceiving urban environments and new strategies for urban regeneration in northern and southern Mediterranean cities. Our main research hypothesis will show how the cultural heritage is now the force for change in Mediterranean cities, and involves stakeholders, craftsmen, local inhabitants and consumers. The case studies of Tunis and Marseille will help to address the issue of the enhancement of historic city centres and the redevelopment of abandoned industrial areas. In Tunis we will…

The "Invisible Children": Uncertain Future of Unaccompanied Minor Migrants in Europe.
2016
Because of their particular helpless condition, the unaccompanied minor migrants are at serious risk to be further deprived of their rights, and to become de facto “invisible” to the authorities, to the public health services, and in general to the public opinion. Furthermore, when they arrive at a destination, or during their journey through Europe, many children often vanish. The full dimension of such phenomenon that further hits the unaccompanied minors along their European migration routes currently is unknown. However, the intense migration that has affected the south Mediterranean borders of the EU over the last 10 years has allowed the collection of sufficient data to raise the high…
El rol del modelo de las competencias en la reconfiguración meritocrática de las pautas de negociación salarial en empresas argentinas: continuidades…
2020
The development of new models of work organization and the complementary advance of flexible guidelines for the use of the labor force had as a correlate a profound change in techniques for the evaluation of workers. Thus, the typical model of Fordism, based on qualifications, was replaced by a different one based on competencies, whereby the strong relationship of the former was abandoned with the determination of the technical knowledge required for each job to move to a system which the priority is placed in the individual attitude. The consequent individualization of performance evaluations can lead to a possible loss of objectivity. In this article we develop a theoretical comparison b…
AREE DISMESSE ED ORTI URBANI: UN “VALORE SOCIALE COMPLESSO” NELLE CITTÀ Abandoned areas and urban gardens: a "complex social value" in the cities
2015
The contribution to the welfare of citizens that urban gardens can generate represents a "social use-value". The social value of horticulture in cities can be expressed by means of an appropriate set of indicators describing the produced values. The proposed work, which is the result of an interdisciplinary collaboration, highlights the potentiality of abandoned and degraded urban areas, and intends to outline a model for the assessment of the social value generated by the introduction of "urban gardens". The proposed model can be utilised for selecting the most suitable areas for the use in question, for monitoring the effects of policies for urban gardens on urban sustainability, and for …
One House for €1: Case Studies on the Governance of Abandoned Properties in Small Villages
2021
Abstract This proposal aims at analyzing the Italian initiative “Case a 1 €” launched in 2009 for the preservation of abandoned goods, in Gangi, a small village near Palermo. The Municipality has put for sale the ruined houses for the symbolic prize of 1 €. As this initiative has been imitated by other municipalities in Italy and thus become a model, my intention is to explore how it works based on two different levels of investigation, in terms of: 1) contractual schemes (parties and respective rights and obligations) and 2) policy choices, comparing proposed and achieved goals by the administrations and the parties. Some relevant issues arise after 12 years: is the initiative an appropria…
Are childhood adversities relevant in patients with chronic low back pain?
2002
Abstract Previous studies have found a high number of childhood adversities in patients with chronic low back pain, particularly in patients reporting persisting problems after back surgery. Our aim was to reproduce these results. Within the framework of a comprehensive diagnostic assessment and psychometric evaluation, 109 inpatients who had been treated for low back pain were examined in the orthopedics department of a German university hospital. Five risk factors investigated by Schofferman and his staff (Schofferman et al ., 1993) were re-assessed in all of our patients using a structured biographical interview. The German chronic low back pain group was also compared with an age- and g…
